Getting To the Castle

This map shows the Castle’s location in Tamworth, in relation to the town centre roads, the railway station and other local amenities.

Getting Into the Castle

Tamworth Castle is located in the centre of Tamworth town. It is accessed from the Castle Grounds, which themselves can be accessed in several ways:

• From the western end of the main concourse in Tamworth’s Ankerside shopping centre, a door opens onto the Castle Grounds, and the Castle is visible at the other end of the grounds.
• From Market Street, you can enter the Castle Grounds via a walkway opposite the Town Hall, passing over a footbridge that crosses the ruins of the Castle’s stone gate-house.
• From Holloway the Castle Grounds are a short walk from the short-stay car park in Holloway (although being a short-stay car park, it would probably be unsuitable for a visit to the Castle, where you would certainly need to spend more than two hours!)

Be aware that access to the castle from the grounds is up  a fairly steep slope (from the east) or via a set of steps up the motte (from the west), and although the Castle has disabled toilet facilities, wheelchair access is llimited to the ground floor. More details are given here.
